We get these questions a lot. What fish are being caught in Portsmouth? Where is best for fishing in Portsmouth? Are the stripers running in Maine yet? Well, Regarding the fish that are being caught in Portsmouth, it can vary depending on the season and location. However, some common fish species that can be caught in the Portsmouth area include striped bass and mackerel. Some popular fishing spots in the area include the Piscataqua River, Great Bay, Hampton Harbor, and Rye Harbor. Lastly, typically the striped bass run in Maine begins in late May or early June and continues through the summer months.

Our striped bass fishing season in New Hampshire typically runs from June 2nd to October 16th, with peak fishing occurring during the summer months. During the early season in June and July, striped bass can be found in the rivers and estuaries, where they spawn and feed on baitfish. This is a great time to use techniques like fly fishing, casting lures, and drifting live bait to target these fish. Check our website regularly for the latest updates and start planning your next New Hampshire fishing adventure today!

Piscataqua River - Rockingham, NH Fishing Report on 30th Jul, 2024

Hard fishing one day, 2nd day the "bite was ON". Day 1, 4-6 ft breaking waves. No way to go out on ocean to get live bait without getting soaked, and it was cold and rainy, East wind. We got 5+ takes but only landed one Keeper, which they took for dinner. Our intrepid family fished on! 2nd day, everyone got fish, a number of keepers and our young boy guest caught 3 keeper-sized (28"-31") Stripers on super light tackle rod with a top-water plastic bait. What a hoot!

Piscataqua River - Rockingham, NH Fishing Report on 28th Jun, 2024

Worked hard to get this nice fish. Went all the way 9 miles offshore to the Isles of Shoals (we heard there might be a bite going on there). But the Shoals had nothing going on. Super quiet. Mackerel were hard to find too. Only put 3 in the livewell. But on returning to the river, we scouted out this nice 28" keeper who slammed a live mackerel right on top of the water in only about 5 feet depth. It was a hoot to see that fish chase down the mackerel, right on top.

Great Bay - Rockingham, NH Fishing Report on 7th Jun, 2023

Took an early morning scouting trip today at 5:30 in a pretty steady rain to see what's happening. Some bunker and baitfish in the river and backchannels, some terns diving on them, but only a couple top water striper schoolies to see. Rosie the fish-sniffin' dog went crazy smellin' some baitfish oil slicks. Didn't try to get mackerel so don't know about live bait.

Piscataqua River - Rockingham, NH Fishing Report on 28th Mar, 2023

We are excited to welcome the 2023 Striper season in the coming months, beginning in June. The season for striped bass in New Hampshire with Fish Taco runs from June 2 to October 16. I've been using a variety of fishing techniques to target striped bass, including live mackerel bait, lures, and swim bait. Fishing the river, and inshore waters around Portsmouth, has been finding plenty of fish ready for the upcoming season. Striped Bass can range in size from a few pounds to over 40 pounds, so be ready for some fishing action!
